Recently I overheard a mother talk about having her children have one turn a week to plan the meals, as long as they were healthy. As an example of what would not do, she stated,”It can’t be pizza!” Pizza is however, one of the healthiest dinners I know. Children Learn What They Live

In 2014 it will be 60 years since the poem “Children Learn what they Live” appeared in the Torrance Herald, a local newspaper (tell the kids what a local newspaper is). The author, Dorothy Louise Law, a “counselor, lecturer, instructor in family life education,” wrote an advice column in the paper.
Growing up, I used to pause before a small paper posted our refrigerator. The title was “Children Learn What They Live.” Never wondering who wrote it or how it got there, I used to ponder some of its logical propositions. Read the rest of this entry »
Vegan Delights

With the new year coming, one of the resolutions some of us toy with is to try to reduce our dependence on animal products, or eliminate them from our diet altogether. Cause we’re cool like that.
Whether for health, ethical or environmental reasons, or just to spruce up our foodie stripes, most of us could diversify our diets by bringing in some vegan items onto our menus. Here are some fun ones to get the ball rolling.
Rainbow Fruit Sticks – Almost
In Recipes on 29 December 2013 at 3:56 amLook up “rainbow fruit sticks” and you will find hundreds of photos of neatly arranged sticks of fruit impaled upon long toothpicks in exactly rainbow coloured order, perhaps even arranged in a nice semicircle, representing the rainbow.
Certainly that is what I intended when I planned to serve rainbow colored fruit sticks at my daughter’s birthday party. I got a watermelon, papaya, pineapple, and grapes – green and purple. The purple would have to do for blue, indigo and violet. Read the rest of this entry »
