Party Treats

In Recipes, What on 15 January 2014 at 2:30 pm

I’d have called this post “Healthy Party Treats” but in present company that goes without saying, doesn’t it?  When I was little, people used the word “healthy” pronounced hell-thee as a synonym for “fat.”  I would say “euphemism” except that it was actually kind of a compliment.  Pleasantly plump, with pleasantly understood.  Ah how times change.

Tender Coconut – fun for all ages

What makes a food a party food …?  Is it merely something you don’t eat every day, eaten in the company of people you don’t meet every day?  Which if you think about it, means almost anything counts!  A plate of carrot sticks will disappear in no time amidst a lively crowd and yet who would think of carrots as party food? Pizza – Vegetarian and Vegan

Baked Pizza

Home-Baked Pizza

Recently I overheard a mother talk about having her children have one turn a week to plan the meals, as long as they were healthy.  As an example of what would not do, she stated,”It can’t be pizza!” Pizza is however, one of the healthiest dinners I know.    Using whole wheat dough to make the crust, and plenty of vegetables for the topping, I don’t see where you can go wrong! Vegan Delights

In Recipes on 29 December 2013 at 4:00 am

Ever since Sejal posted her recipe for Coconut-fig ice-cream, there has been a flurry of interest in vegan food.  With the new year coming, one of the resolutions some of us toy with is to try to reduce our dependence on animal products, or eliminate them from our diet altogether.  Cause we’re cool like that.

Whether for health, ethical or environmental reasons, or just to spruce up our foodie stripes, most of us could diversify our diets by bringing in some vegan items onto our menus.   Here are some fun ones to get the ball rolling.

Rainbow Fruit Sticks – Almost

In Recipes on 29 December 2013 at 3:56 am

Look up “rainbow fruit sticks” and you will find hundreds of photos of neatly arranged sticks of fruit impaled upon long toothpicks in exactly rainbow coloured order, perhaps even arranged in a nice semicircle, representing the rainbow.

Certainly that is what I intended when I planned to serve rainbow colored fruit sticks at my daughter’s birthday party.  I got a watermelon, papaya, pineapple, and grapes –  green and purple.  The purple would have to do for blue, indigo and violet.   Read the rest of this entry »

How to boost immunity

In How on 30 October 2013 at 10:25 pm

Our son is falling sick often. Last week he had another virus attack and this time it was foot, hand and mouth disease. He is doing a lot better now. But has lost some weight.  We feel it is certainly to do with his immunity, that he is falling sick so often.  How can we boost his immunity?

Parents of a 1 year old near Baltimore

Immunity depends on individual as well as community factors.  The example of Roseto* suggests that in a close-knit community, one is less prone to illness.  Although most discussions of health and immunity focus on tangibles, such as food, exercise, sleep, hygiene, environment and safety, intangibles play as much a role or more in keeping our immune system strong.   Read the rest of this entry »

Simple Snacks 2

In Recipes on 9 August 2013 at 6:39 pm

After the runaway popularity of simple snacks, here is a second set of simple snacks.   The first set of snacks used raw ingredients.

The snacks pictured below involve some cooking or include ingredients that aren’t raw, such as puffed rice (in the bhel) or bread (in the mango toast).   You can adjust the proportions to your taste.   For those who want more guidance, I have posted recipes for some of these such as Ragi and Hummous.

Long long ago in a land far far away I moved into a house of 13 people. Read the rest of this entry »
